Microbiologists recommend that a bathroom be cleaned at least once a week. This way any serious buildup of mildew, mold or dirt is prevented. Remember that not all stains, cracks or damages to appliances or fixtures can be cleaned, and they’ll need to be discarded and replaced. There are loads of budget bathroom renovation tips out there.
Follow these simple cleaning hacks to get your bathroom sparkling and clean.
1. Create a cleaning list
Before going in to tackle the bathroom it is best to be prepared with a list of things that need cleaning. This will ensure you keep track of what you have cleaned in case you don’t finish it all in one day. A list also makes the task appear less daunting and can give you a plan of action in terms of what to work through first.
2. Remove shower curtain mildew
Damp bathrooms are particularly common and often result in mildew buildup. To rid any mildew on shower curtains or covers follow these easy steps. Place the curtains in the wash but add ½ cup of baking soda to the detergent. When it’s time to rinse, add ½ cup of vinegar. Your shower curtains will be as good as clean.
3. Wipe down all surfaces
The bathtub and shower should be soaked in an all-purpose cleaner before scrubbing. If the base of the bathtub or shower floor is covered in a thick layer of grime, then apply a coat of baking soda and allow to sit. This should help absorb the dirt.
4. Clean out the toilet
Start with wiping and disinfecting the inside of the toilet bowl and around the seat. A toilet bowl cleaner or tablet can be placed in the rim of the bowl or water, this will kill bacteria and remove mild stains. White vinegar or baking soda can be applied to the surface to if any marks remain.
5. Deep clean the shower head
Fill a resealable or plastic grocery bag with ½ cup of vinegar and tie it around the shower head. Remove the bag after several hours and run hot water through the shower head to rinse.
6. Use a lemon to remove hard water stains
If you live in an area with hard water then you’ll be familiar with the stains around chrome fixtures and faucets. Simply cut a lemon in half and use either piece to scrub the stains out of the surface.
7. Mixing steam to for cleaning glass surfaces
Spray an all-purpose cleaner onto glass panels, mirror and granite tops before turning on a hot tap to steam the room. As the hot water pours out the room will steam up and the cleaning product will mix with it. After allowing to soak for 20 minutes, wipe down all surfaces with a microfibre cloth.
8. Leave the floor for last
This task should be left till the end, as you’ll be working around the rest of the bathroom and dirty water and dust is likely to collect on it. It also wouldn’t be possible to clean inside the bathroom when the floors are wet. First, sweep the floors to remove any dust. Take a wire brush and scrub the grout with a quality cleaning product. Finally, mop the floor with a mixture of dish washing liquid and vinegar to deep clean the stains.
